The Miracle of Spring

From Frédéric Back

THE MIRACLE OF SPRING is based on a legend of the Micmac native people, whose ancestral home is Acadia. It relates the terror inspired by Howling Wolf, the name given by the natives to the storming wind, and the protection that the trees give to children pursued by this wind. Unable to reach the children, the maddened wind turns to cold weather and to snow.
But a little girl’s prayer touches the heart of Gouseclappe, the God of the Micmacs. He orders Sun to chase away Howling Wolf and White Bear. Gouseclappe resuscitates the dead leaves and transforms them into birds. Since then, that same miracle occurs every spring; the birds return to the branches of the trees where they were born.
