The Rapidly Changing Arctic

Découverte

The first hour examines the overall Arctic territory, while providing an overview of current sovereignty disputes. To whom does the North truly belong? The answer to this question hinges on military force . . . but also on the work of geologists.

The second hour explores the major waterways that will soon be open to commercial shipping lines: the Canadian Northwest Passage and the Northeast Passage along the coast of Siberia. Although Canada still lacks the resources it needs to ensure sovereignty of its passage, the Russians have fully equipped themselves to protect theirs.

In the third hour, we look at the fragile balance of Arctic ecosystems, and see what can be done to ensure that resource development will not be carried out at the expense of the North's residents, both human and animal. That challenge lies, for the most part, in the hands of scientists.
