Improvisation musicale sur Internet 2 / Internet 2 Jam Session

La compétition est bien entamée. Les compositeurs sont en pleine effervescence créative: Vincent Ho travaille tard dans la nuit, Andrew Staniland garde la forme avec un passage quotidien au gymnase et moi, j’ai eu l’occasion d’assister au futur.

Des dizaines de fils jaunes, mauves et oranges jonchent le sol. Plusieurs ordinateurs sont reliés à des enceintes acoustiques réparties dans la pièce, et Chris Chafe prépare une séance d’improvisation musicale avec la Californie, qui passera par le réseau de recherche universitaire Internet 2.

Le Centre Banff pour les arts reçoit en résidence Chris Chafe, professeur à l'Université Stanford. Lui-même joue du violoncelle électrique fait maison. Il est accompagné d’un joueur d’EWI (Instrument à vent électronique) et d’une douzaine d’autres instrumentistes reliés à la pièce par le biais d'Internet et de logiciels expérimentaux. Aujourd’hui, ils organisent une improvisation avec San Diego et Standford.

Here’s a short interview with Chris Chafe:

The competition is well under way. The composers are letting their creative juices flow: Vincent Ho works into the wee hours; Andrew Staniland stays in shape by going to the gym every day; and me, well, I got to see into the future.

Dozens of yellow, purple and orange wires line the floor. Several computers are hooked up to loudspeakers enclosures spread around the room, and Chris Chafe is cooking up a musical improvisation with California that will go through the university research network Internet 2.

The Banff Centre is proud to welcome artist-in-residence Chris Chafe, a professor with Stanford University. He plays homemade electronic cello himself. He’s accompanied by an EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) player and a dozen other instrumentalists all connected via the Web and some experimental software. Today they’re organizing an improvisation with San Diego and Stanford.
